Hellping Hops with Helltown Brewing

Don’t let the name fool you. Helltown Brewing in Export, PA didn’t need to think twice about giving back to the community. When we looked at creative ways to help out during these times and some of the limitations the pandemic has imposed on everyone, Helltown stepped up. Helping Hops is helping to offset some base ingredient costs and Helltown is taking care of the rest; providing their passion, expertise, and resources to brew a special limited run of a New England IPA to benefit the Westmoreland and Greater Washington County Food Banks for our neighbors across the border in Pennsylvania. These organizations are battling food insecurity daily through a wide range of programs in Southwestern Pennsylvania. Please join us in raising a beer to all their good work.

Every minute, more than 1,000 gallons of water polluted by heavy metals pours into Sunday Creek at the site of Ohio’s largest mine discharge. That’s a lot of potential beer! A persistent legacy of historical coal mining, this tainted water called acid mine drainage, seeps out of long-abandoned mines and prevents life from flourishing. After more than a decade in development, Rural Action and Ohio University have created a technology to treat this water. Their first project will restore seven miles of critically impacted stream. Iron oxide will be removed and sold as a zero waste product that will pay for the treatment. Learn more at ruralaction.org/truepigments

Brewed by Pretentious Barrel House in collaboration with Helping Hops, 100% of the profits from this exclusive bottle will go to fund Rural Action’s watershed programs. A special thanks to Ben Siegel courtesy of Ohio University for capturing the image of the acid mine drainage in the aerial footage and allowing us to raise awareness of the issue with the label. This is an extremely limited release.

In Appalachian Ohio, the nonprofit Rural Action is promoting sustainable agriculture and getting healthy food to families who have few options when they shop locally. Working in areas designated as food deserts, the group is increasing access to fresh foods by connecting local growers to schools, hospitals, restaurants, food banks, and social service agencies working with low-income households. Rural Action’s projects such as the Chesterhill Produce Auction in Morgan County, a regional food distribution hub, serve as large economic drivers in some of Ohio’s most distressed communities.
